Pool Report: Lovely Luton (#792)

I asked ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini to describe Luton in three words. I got:
Gritty. Transient. Unvarnished
Industrial. Diverse. Connected.
Gritty, underrated, unpretentious.
I’ll take Underrated and Unpretentious (props to Anthropic) but, based upon only visiting the 2012-era, 8-lane, 50-meter, all deep competition pool at the Inspire: Luton Sports Village, I would add LOVELY.

I have had this pool on my “London Pool Bucket List” for awhile, but it’s just far enough away, a bit more of a palaver to get to, and in the wrong direction of my normal travels, so it took Monday’s “Early May Bank Holiday” for me to carve out the time to get there.
My 3,000-meter / 200 free and fly race pace focused workout made it pool #792 on my #1001Pools list. While they have up to a 10-meter diving platform, they had the movable floor at that end set to align with the constant 2.0M depth of the rest of the pool. Besides being a brilliant pool, the big bonus was having the center-of-the-pool, side-mounted scoreboard running as a massive digital pace clock, easily visible from both ends.
My only (very minor) gripe is that they only had four lanes running for lap swimming, but the other four lanes were just empty with no programming. I only shared with 3-5 other people, but it would have been nice to have the whole pool.
Spoiled. Picky. Persnickety.
(Three words the Inspire: Luton staff are using to describe me right now)
