Canadian Masters (SCM) Nationals are behind me so I'm turning my training attention to the European Aquatics LCM Masters Championships being held mid-August near Bratislava, Slovakia. With my second daughter's wedding outside of Toronto tomorrow, my training time has been limited this week, but I did manage to squeeze in 3,400-meters in the excellent training pool at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre this morning:

Assuming my wonky right knee* holds up, I will target my training for the 200 & 400 IM. I am also entered in the 200 free and 50 back for the two days I will race in Slovakia, but will just let those races flow as they do.

They had something like 20 lanes open, so I had a lane to myself in the widthwise section and was able to run through an IM version of the Grant Hackett 200 race pace test set after a typical 1,000 meters of warmup sets. I wasn't expecting much and my expectations were met!

  • On round 1 of 16 x 50 on 0:45 with 1 fast and 3 cruise, I started at 38 / 40 / 48 / 35 (fly / back / breast / free)

  • By round 4 of 4 x 50 on 1:05 all fast, at 34+ / 36+ / 43 / 33.

It felt great to be back in the pool after almost a week out of the water** ... and I'll start June with more structure to my training for 10 weeks before tapering.

** I've not been able to properly kick breaststroke most days for the last six months due to knee pain, but I'm seeing someone about this in a few weeks.

** Maia and I did get in 3,200 LCM at the Etobicoke Olympium on Tuesday this week.
