I should not have been surprised that I couldn't really hit anything like peak speed today. I have not taken a day off from training for over week, but I think I'm on the right track. Today was a repeat effort of my Pulse Plot test set along with a little speed work at my local LA Fitness.
Warmup Sets (1,300)
1 x 400: IM kick-drill
6 x 50: on 0:50, descend in 3s, freestyle, backstroke
3 x 100: on 1:50, dolphin-flutte kick on back descend
1 x 50: easy scull
8 x 25: on 1:00 per pair, odds fast IM order (14.3, 15.8 to feet, 18.2, 14.3 to feet) evens easy
1 x 50: easy scull
Pulse Plot / Heart Rate Test Set (800 set / 2,100 total)
8 x 100: on 3:00, getting time and taking pulse at 0:10, 0:30, 1:00 after finishing
Comparing about 6 weeks ago (blue) and three days ahead of this spring's Canadian Masters Nationals, I've improved from a fitness perspective (with the aggregate pulse lower), but with no speed improvement. Which is fine for two weeks out from racing.
Sprint Close (650 set / 2,750 total)
8 x 25: on 1:15 per pair, odds fast IM order (13.9, 15.1 to feet, 17.9, 13.5 to feet) evens easy
5 x 50: active recovery on 0:40, 0:45, 0:50, 0:55
And now ... it's time to take a day off and start some serious resting!
